Avalokiteshvara, ( Sanskrit: avalokita, “looking on”; ishivara, “lord”) Chinese (Pinyin) Guanyin or (Wade-Giles romanization) Kuan-yin, Japanese Kannon in Buddhism, and primarily in Mahayana Buddhism, the Bodhisattva (“Buddha-to-be”) of infinite compassion and mercy, possibly the most popular of all figures in Buddhist legend. Avalokiteshvara is beloved throughout the Buddhist world, not only in Mahayana Buddhism but also in Theravada (“Way of the Elders”). and in Vajrayana Buddhism.

Avalokiteshvara supremely exemplifies the Bodhisattva’s resolve to postpone his own Buddhahood until he has helped every sentient being on earth to achieve liberation (moksha, literally means “release”) from suffering (dukkha) and the process of death and rebirth (samsara). His name has been variously interpreted as “the lord who looks in every direction” and “the lord of what we see” (that is, the actual created world). In Tibet he is known as Spyan-ras gzigs (“With a Pitying Look”) and in Mongolia as Nidü-ber üjegči (“He Who Looks with the Eyes”). The title invariably used for him in Cambodia and Thailand is Lokeshvara (“Lord of the World”). In China, where he is often worshipped in female form, he is Guanyin (“Hears Cries”). In Sri Lanka he is known as Natha-deva (often mistakenly confused with Maitreya, the Buddha yet to come).

Empowerment of ‘Avalokiteshvara’ Chenrezig is the blessings of Chenrezig who help you to develop loving/compassion and wisdom that dispel the ignorant, it is advisable to receive the empowerment when some one wants to practice the Sadhana and Mantra.

After many years of trying to set up a Tana Centre in Malaysia, we are finally here. We have rented a shop lot in Subang Jaya and set up the Centre to serve all of you.

This Wesak Day which falls on the  10th May, 2017  commemorates the Birth,  Enlightenment and Parinirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha, The Enlightened One.  Hence, the full moon on this day should be spent engaging in virtuous activities and spiritual practice for the benefit of all sentient beings.  Tana Monastery will be doing a full day 100 Deities Jang Chog  puja for the deceased and karmic debtors on Wesak Day.  If you wish to participate in this puja or make a prayer gift to a friend or deceased,  please submit the name of the deceased or the living donor’s name for karmic debtor below.  Please email to us at or, the form below.  The donation for the puja is any amount.

Details on the Puja

The Origin 

The 100 Deities are the attributes and activities of the 5 Buddhas and their female counterparts. They are the manifestations from the pure nature of our minds, and remain within us in the form of 5 faculties, 5 elements and 12 sources of perception and so on. By relying on the practice of the 100 deities or  hearing the mantra, seeing the mandala and picture of the 100 Deities, one may either instantly or gradually realize  the nature of one’s own mind is inseparable from the perfect wisdom of the 100 Deities. 

The Puja and Benefits 

During the performance of Jang Chog puja, the 100 Deities are invoked and various types of offerings are made to them. The merits accumulated from these offerings are dedicated to the deceased and karmic debtors to help them in their purification and liberation. The prayer is also an offering of assistance to those in the intermediate or Bardo state to show them the path to liberation and an accumulation  of merit. 

At the end of puja, the paper tablets of the deceased are burnt away. The fire used in the burning symbolizes the wisdom of the 100 Deities; the burning of the tablets symbolizes the cutting of the attachment of the deceased to a “self” which is the cause of their own suffering. Through the prayer and the ritual performed, the consciousness of the deceased are merged and become inseparable from the wisdom of the 100 Deities, thus they are liberated. By practicing the 100 Deities, like all tantric practices, one is able to purify one’s own mind’s manifestation  and transform ordinary thoughts to extraordinary thoughts that  leads to recognize the true nature of one self and nature of everything. 
Lamp offering


Lamp offering symbolizes the light of wisdom dispelling the darkness of ignorance, in order to attain Buddha’s luminous clear wisdom. It is also a skilful method to encourage harmony and generate merit while promoting success, prosperity, longevity, peace and love, as well as helping to avert obstacles, pacify the upheaval of the five elements and heal diseases. The enlightened ones do not require the offering of light, this is a means for us to dispel the darkness of our own ignorance and to clear our obscurations and defilements.

Because of the association with great good fortune,lamp offerings are made for any individual or family life event that is celebrated, such as the birth of a child, the marriage of a couple, the graduation of a son or daughter, the birthday of a friend, and the anniversary of one’s parents. A lamp offering also carries the wish to attain Buddhahood and the aspiration to recognize the clear light at the time of death, thereby experiencing liberation in that moment. In this way, lamp offerings are associated with transitions in one’s life.  

Lamp offerings are best made before consecrated representations of fully awakened wisdom, loving-kindness, and compassion.

Namaste!   The New Year is around the corner and Tana monastery will be conducting the usual pujas as follows: 



To remove obstacles and welcome the New Year, the monks of Tana Monastery India will be conducting the year-end pujas over a period of  6 days; the dates of the pujas are as follows: 


(1)   Vajrakilaya Puja – 24, 25 & 26 January, 2017  (Note: Chinese New Year 28-29 January 2017)

(2)   Dorje Drolo Puja – 23, 24, & 25 February, 2017

Both the pujas help to prevent the obstacles from the past year from carrying forward into the New Year.  It will specially protect us from powerful demons. Please read the brief write-up about the pujas below.  

You may sponsor both the pujas by making a donation of any amount.



The Monastery will also be offering a set of robes to the Sangha members on  26th February, 2017, eve of Lorsar (Tibetan New Year) together with towel/slippers and other requisites.  The robes can be sponsored atRM180/set.  If you wish to undertake this meritorious deed, please indicate the same in your remittance.  You may sponsor any number of sets as you wish.  The young lamas, about 50 of them, will wear these new robes on Lorsar day to welcome the New Year.

Here is a brief write-up for both the Vajrakilaya Grand Fire Puja and Dorje Drolod Grand Fire Puja for your information:


Vajrakilaya Grand Fire Puja


A Puja is a Buddhist ceremony. Vajrakilaya is Buddha manifesting particularly the enlightened qualities of the complete reversal & utter destruction of ignorance and of negativity, which are synonymous & synchronous with the complete expansion and revelation of wisdom and compassion that is Buddha.  Vajrakilaya was one of the main practices that Padmasambhava transmitted to his students.  The practice of Vajrakilaya has great significance in that it is what Padmasambhava last performed in Nepal before his triumphant arrival and victorious introduction of Buddhism from India to Tibet in the 8th Century AD.  Following the example of Guru Padmasambhava and many superb lineage masters, we perform Vajrakilaya to overcome outer, inner, and secret obstacles to Dharma practice and activity as well worldly activities.


Dorje Drolod Grand Fire Puja 

Crazy Wisdom Vajra”, a wrathful manifestation of Padmasambhava and a subduer of demons.  Guru Padma arose in the wrathful form of Dorje Drolod in the famous Tagstang or Tiger’s Nest Cave in Bhutan to subdue the negative and demonic forces of these degenerate times. Ferocious in expression, amidst a mass of primordial wisdom fire, he stands upon the back of a pregnant tigress who is the wrathful form of his Wisdom Consort of enlightened activity, Tashi Kye Dren, whose ferocity is unpredictable and wild. Dressed in a robe of brocade, his hair is red and curly, he has an overbite and fangs and wears a garland of severed heads representing the cutting of the 52 levels of dualistic mental-events. In his right hand he holds aloft a vajra emitting lightning bolts, and in his left a kila-phurba, a three-sided ritual dagger which severs the three poisons that are the source of all suffering. The ferocious expression he wears while riding a pregnant tigress who is munching on a corpse makes for a menacing figure. His body is dark brown and surrounded by a halo of flames.
